Can You Put Coffee in a Stainless Steel Water Bottle?

Stainless Steel Water Bottles

Stainless steel drink bottles have become popular over the past decade. Many people are moving away from plastic water bottles because they are bad for our health and they are piling up in our landfills and floating in our oceans. Drinking from stainless steel water bottles can save you money too. There is no doubt that the right stainless steel water bottles are amazing water containers. But are they good for other beverages like coffee?

People love coffee

Many people can’t start their day without getting their daily dose of caffeine. About 400 billions cups of coffee are consumed annually. People drink coffee at home, in cafes, coffee shops and bars. What this tells us is that coffee is one of the world’s most consumed beverages, be it at home or on the go.

On the go coffee usually comes in disposable coffee cups that are either made from paper or plastic. Paper coffee cups are being advertised as eco-friendly but that is not entirely true. Many trees need to be felled to make paper coffee cups and not to mention these paper coffee cups are lined with polyethylene which is made from petroleum.

There are many reusable coffee cups out there and most of the time they are really good. However, one option is often overlooked, the stainless steel water bottle.

One thing you should understand about stainless steel water bottles is that they are not the same. Sure, a manufacturer can slap “stainless steel” on their product but that does not mean they are safe to drink from. This means you can’t just buy anything that says stainless steel water bottle. When you buy a water bottle, make sure to look for either an 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel water bottle. These water bottles are made from food grade stainless steel and the numbers indicate the amount of chromium and nickel in the stainless steel material. The first number indicates the amount of chromium, which protects the water bottle from oxidation or rust. The second number indicates the amount of nickel which makes the water bottle resistant from corrosion.

So yes you can put coffee in a stainless steel water bottle. But you have to make sure you have the right stainless steel water bottle for that purpose. You can always read the product description as well as contact the manufacturer’s support team to confirm this. If you are planning to put coffee in your water bottle, make sure you buy something that has insulation to keep your beverage cold or hot for an extended period of hours. Buy something that is leak proof too so that you won’t have to deal with accidental leaks and spillage. This is particularly practical and helpful especially if you are a commuter.

While you can use water bottles for beverages other than water, there are some beverages that are a big no-no. For instance, it is not recommended to put lemonade in your stainless steel water bottle because the acidity of the lemonade may cause damage to your water bottle.
