Table decoration and centrepiece ideas:

Whether you are thinking about a wedding reception, valentines day or Christmas table decorations its always good to have a few tricks up your sleeve to make your table look effortlessly chic.

Pine cones are a great addition to a Christmas table, thanksgiving table or any other fall tablescape. They can be fashioned into neat little holders for place cards, or interspersed with candles for a lovely alternative centrepiece. We also have some lovely felt Christmas decorations that look very cute on the table.

Fresh flowers are always a lovely addition. Choose a low vase so guests can see over them or opt for lots of little jars and vases dotted down the centre of the table. For valentines day, you might choose roses or scatter rose petals on the table while sweet peas fresh from the garden are perfect for the summer months.

And it doesnt just have to be fowers. Herbs look great on the table and the scent of them with add to the meal. You could use potted herbs in place of a bunch of flowers or tie sprigs of rosemary to napkins in place of napkin rings. Holly works really well for this at Christmas and saves buying expensive napkin rings or testing your folding skills.

For your Easter table decorations use little easter eggs instead or rose petals and choose a couple of the felt so good figures or decorations to complete the look. Fresh spring daffodils will add vibrant colour to your Easter table for very little expense or you could choose potted tete a tete if you prefer to steer away from cut flowers.

If you are looking for something a little different for father's day, or an unusual gift idea for a birthday, a recycled bicycle chain wine rack or decorative antelope head made from recycled wire could be just the quirky presents you are looking for.

And trivet and coasters are perfect for protecting your dining table and work well with a rustic decor theme. The clocks could make a great addition to a man cave or workshop and the bookends are a fun way to keep a bookshelf or desk tidy.

There are also lots of lovely vintage inspired accessories. The decorative globe on a metal stand is the perfect gift for travel lovers. Spin the globe for ideas on where to go next reminisce about a life full of adventures. This goes really beautifully with the nautical set and sand timer especially for those who have a love of steampunk or nautical decorating.

Gifts for women:

We have so many ideas for gifts for women but if you are looking to move away from the classic chocolate or pamper treats and choose something a little more unusual then a fairtrade gift for the home is thoughtful, personal and will hopefully be something they treasure for years.

Both the Viri hanging planters from nkuku and the three-tier hanging baskets by Artisans Fair are a lovely alternative to giving flowers and the perfect way to add a bit of greenery into your home without taking up valuable surface space.

Photo frames also make fabulous gifts for men or women. The nkuku metal frames are handmade and all totally unique due to the addition of a recycled sari silk hanging tie. We love the fact that these are glass backed making them ideal for framing all sorts of momentoes such as concert tickets, pressed flowers, or maps as well as photos.

Mix and match sizes and colours and use alongside the other recycled or reclaimed frames for a fantastic feature wall full of memories.

Candles are also a popular choice for gifts and the stunning fair trade, hand poured Bali mantra candles come in beautiful reusable containers that are lovely ornaments in their own right and perfect for storing treats or trinkets once the candle has been used.

Or choose from a range of decorative tea light holders that look lovely, are fairly traded and made from recycled or reclaimed materials.

Gift Cards and Mystery Boxes

If you are looking for a gift and can't quite decide why not choose a gift card or mystery box. A gift card will let the recipient choose the perfect gift for them and you know that your money has been spent responsibly in a way that cares for both the environment and the people right along the supply chain.

Or if you want something to wrap up and give (or just a nice surprise for yourself) try one of the mystery boxes. You can specify in the comments that you would like something for the home and who the gift is for then let the Babame fairies do the rest.

Win-win.

If you have multiple prints you wish to have on display you could combine a number of frames in different styles to create wall collages or choose one of the multi-picture frames. We love the hand-carved daisy frame which can hold five 4x6 photos, two portraits and three landscape, behind a glass window to display and protect. It has a lovely waxed finish with antique white painted daisies carved as a trim at the bottom. There's also a matching single frame. The Rainbow spectrum frame is slightly subtler but equally stunning and again you could choose a matching bowl or candle plate to go with it for a really lovely fair trade gift.

And we don't just sell photo frames at babame. We also have a really lovely range of sustainable, fair trade, handmade photo albums that photographers will love. The paper high recycled sari albums are bright, beautifully made and great for displaying and protecting a whole series of pictures. The pages are acid-free, interleaved with tissue paper and made from recycled unbleached cotton. The super smooth pages are a joy to write on meaning you can add your own captions and annotations to the photos. These albums also make lovely scrapbooks.

If paper made from recycled cotton isn't quite unusual enough for you. How about elephant dung? Elephant dung is collected, washed and the fibres dried and mixed with recycled paper. The resulting albums, notebooks and stationery sets make wonderfully quirky gifts. The photo albums come in a beautiful presentation box and have a handmade brass elephant motif on the cover.

The largest one can hold 150 photos making it a perfect wedding album or ideal for keeping photos and mementoes from the holiday of a lifetime. And the notebooks would make a really nice guestbook or travel journal.

Not only are all these frames fairly traded, meaning the artisans who make them have received a fair price for the work they do but they are made from mostly reclaimed materials. Each frame has a story to tell and could have been a dress, chest of draws, part of a boat or even a whisky barrel in a former life. The driftwood and bicycle chains might have travelled thousands of miles before ending up in the hands of the skilled craftsmen who have given them a new lease of life.

h2>Find the perfect Vase

There's no doubt that flowers are a great addition to any room in the house. From a single flower in an apothecary jar on your bedside table to a perfectly arranged fishbowl of roses on the dining room table, fresh flowers are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

You may have any number of vases in the cupboard gathering dust yet when it comes to choosing the perfect container for a bunch of flowers you either stick them in a jug or fashion a jam jar or milk bottle into a recycled glass vase. Our range of handmade fair trade glass, wood and ceramic vases are the perfect addition to your ethical house decorations and look beautiful with or without flowers.

A Vase of Beautiful Flowers in Every Room

Gorgeous flowers in every room. Yes, please!!  Dining tables, bedroom cabinets, console tables, coffee tables in the living room, a sideboard in the hall. Any home decoration can be improved with the scent and sight of fresh flowers. Whether they are spring flowers you have picked on a walk in the woods or a gorgeous bouquet for a special occasion. A beautiful hand blown glass bowl or collection of recycled jars also make lovely home accessories without the flowers and we think our range make gorgeous pieces of art in their own right.

Although buying flowers from the supermarket might not great in ethical terms you can now often pick up fair trade roses and there are loads of amazing British flower farms, several of which have online stores so there's no reason you can't still enjoy beautiful fresh flowers and give them as gifts.

Once you have your gorgeous bunch of flowers though showing it off is another matter. If you're not a natural flower arranger then choosing the right vessel can go a long way to making your bouquet look it's best.

Choosing the right vessel:

  • Choosing the right size certainly makes a difference. Generally, you dont want the stems to be more than a maximum of twice the height of your container.
  • The shape is also important. A trumpet shape is great for structured displays and big flowers such as hydrangeas but your average bunch of flowers will just spread out all over the place and would much prefer a narrow neck to give structure and support.
  • Choose a container that matches the look you are going for. A wildflower bouquet or sweet peas fresh from the garden will kool perfect spilling out of a ceramic jug or old milk bottle. Whereas a modern minimalist home might better suit a square shape or even succulents in a glass terrarium.

The graduated colour glass bottle is the perfect small glass bottle to display a single bud or small posy of wildflowers and looks lovely as part of a collection of little bottles and jars as a table centrepiece. These little bottles make great little gift for her gifts when you dont want to buy chocolates or bath products and the neutral colours mean they work well with any decor. And, there's also a matching candle holder.

The ceramic vases are all handmade and drip glazed for a modern two-tone effect. The Ellingen is perfect for big round blooms or they make great planters for orchids or other houseplants for a longer lasting floral display. Although the short height isnt suitable for all flowers these work well on a coffee table or as a dining table centrepiece where you want to be able to see over the flowers.

For taller displays the Olney, with it's eye-catching orange glaze looks stunning filled with gladioli and will brighten up any mantlepiece or sideboard while the Elemesre has a small opening making it ideal for a few twigs loaded with spring blossom or bare and ready to decorate with fairy lights or some of our fair trade Christmas decorations.

The recycled aluminium vase is super versatile and a great addition to any collection. The narrow neck allows the stems to spread out whilst holding them at the top making flower arranging a breeze and the colour works particularly well with either white or vibrant jewel colour flowers for a really striking display.

Accentuate furniture or create a centrepiece with beautiful vases. Equally beautiful as decorative accessories or overflowing with floral displays, a fairly traded decorative piece makes a unique gift that will be treasured for years to come. Shop traditional and modern, handmade in ceramics, metal and glass, in statement shapes and colours. These functional art pieces can be combined with our range of candle holders, rugs, table lamps and wall décor to add the finishing touches to your décor and really make a house a home.

There really is nothing nicer than filling your life with flowers. They brighten the spirits and are often used to convey words of thanks, condolence, celebration and love. And while planting urns or hanging planters full of wildflower seeds is great for outdoor spaces, vases are the perfect solution for filling indoor spaces with flowers. Most furniture can be lifted with the right flowers and there’s no reason they have to be fresh flowers either. A beautiful silk flower arrangement can be far more ethical and long-lasting, just add fragrance diffusers or candles to replace the scent.

Ethically fresh cut flowers can be a bit of a nightmare as most of the flowers in our shops are imported. The Fairtrade movement has made big strides and you can now get fair trade roses from most places meaning you at least know the growers have been paid a fair price. But there’s still the environmental impact of air miles to be considered. However, there are some amazing British flower farms with sound ethical and environmental principles so with a bit of forward planning it’s still possible to enjoy fresh flowers and give them as gifts.

Top tips for choosing the perfect Vase

Tip 1: Size Matters

As a general rule, your flower stems should be no more than one and a half to two times the size of your chosen container. Equally, you don’t want to dwarf the flowers.

A large floor one, for example, works well with structural flowers like delphiniums and gladioli or foliage. Think tall blossom sprigs in spring, leafy branches in summer and twigs intertwined with fairy lights in the winter. You could even create a glass terrarium or fill with rocks. Whereas smaller ones will suit shorter stemmed more delicate flowers.

Fillers can be handy if you don't quite have the perfect size, pebbles or glass beads also add to the overall look of your floral arrangements.

Tip 2: Look at the neck

As well as the height/size look at the opening. A trumpet jar, often used as towering â€Ëœeiffel tower’ wedding centrepieces, are great for displaying flowers such as hydrangeas and structured floral displays, but chuck in a bunch of lilies and they’ll spread out all over the place, they much prefer a cylinder glass one.

Ceramic vases that are narrower at the top are much better for mixed flower bunches or roses as they support (and hide) the stems.

Whereas a bottleneck is great for showing off a few stems. The hand thrown Elemesre Clay pottery urns are perfect for this. Beautifully drip glazed, this handmade piece of ceramic art is the perfect accent for your dining room with or without flowers.

Tip 3: Match the shape to your décor or theme

A rectangular or square vessel is great for modern interiors and are great for arranging single stemmed flowers like tulips as they have room to spread out.

For rustic cottage garden charm choose a ceramic pottery jug and let flowers spill over the edge. Think sweet peas, cornflowers and giant daisies. These displays also work well for outdoor summer dining.

For elegant roses or lilies choose a long slender glass cylinder pot mirrors the shape of the flowers. A fishbowl shape filled with a tightly constructed posy is also a classic, cut the stems to the height of the pot and create a domed effect to again mirror the shape of the jar.

If you want to create a vintage display fill a selection of apothecary jars, recycled glass jars, pretty bowls or even antique Waterford crystal glasses with small posies. Intersperse with candles on a mantelpiece or dining table for a really beautiful display that also acts as a lighting feature.

3 Types of Vases you should own:

  • Narrow necked This is a really versatile style allowing stems to spread out while holding them neatly at the top. The Olney clay or recycled brushed aluminium tall are both good examples. Black works particularly well with white or jewel coloured flowers and can be used to create a really striking display. This shape is are also great for displaying decorative branches or twigs.
  • Short and round Not suitable for all flowers but look gorgeous when filled with a tight bouquet or even a big bunch of daffodils with the stems cut short. This shape is ideal for a coffee or dining table when you need to be able to see over your floral display. The Ellingen Clay one is a lovely alternative to a blown glass bowl with the added benefit that you cant see the stems. It features a textured pattern and turquoise glaze and could also double as a planter covering over any unsightly plastic pots.
  • Bud  Small and perfectly formed they are designed to hold a single bloom or a small hand-tied posy of flowers. Display in mismatched clusters on a sideboard or coffee table or place one on your bedside table to brighten up your day. The Graduated colour glass bottles make stunning gifts or contemporary addition to your eco home.
