How Clean and Store Wooden Pull Along Toys
Are wooden pull along toys difficult to clean?
Many parents donít buy wooden toys because of the false notion that they are difficult to clean. Sure, plastic toys are easier to clean because you can simply toss most of them into a dishwasher. Generally, wooden toys like pull alongs are not that difficult to clean. In fact, itís so easy to clean them and wood has natural antibacterial properties.
Letís take a closer look on how to clean pull along toys.
Never submerge or soak
Wood is porous so itís never a good idea to soak your wooden pull along toys in water or any kind of liquid solution. Otherwise, you will end up with a deformed toy and you donít want that.
You may be in a hurry and just want to toss your wooden pull along into your dishwasher. Donít do it because it will damage your lovely toy. Cleaning wooden toys using hot or running water causes the wood to swell which will result in damages to the toy.
Removing obvious dirt and grime
It should not come as a surprise that pull along toys become dirty and grimy overtime. Children love playing with them and wheel them everywhere they go and that includes outside of your house. If your children pull their pull alongs with them outside, chances are the wheels of the toy would have accumulated dirt from the ground.
Before cleaning your childrenís pull along toys, remove any dirt or grime using a used toothbrush, a sponge or a soft-bristle cleaning brush. Make sure to scrub the wheels and the body of the pull along properly. For tough stains and dirt, you can use baking soda or sodium bicarbonate. Baking soda is a common kitchen item and is known for its natural cleaning properties.
Cleaning your wooden pull along the right way
Prepare your cleaning solution and put it inside a spray bottle. Use mild soap and itís highly recommended to use natural cleaning soap like Castille. If you are disinfecting, you dilute vinegar with water. Vinegar is a popular disinfectant and known for its natural antibacterial properties.
Spritz a little of your cleaning solution into the pull along toy. Wipe clean using a damp cloth. Make sure to wipe thoroughly to remove any remaining vinegar and soapy solution. If the pull along toy has lots of nooks and crannies, use a thin brush like a drinking straw brush to clean hard-to-reach areas.
Wipe your pull along toy before drying it. Air drying is good but sun drying is better. The heat of the sun kills germs and bacteria naturally. However, you should monitor your pull along toy when drying under the heat of the sun because prolonged exposure to heat can cause paint chipping.
Most pull along toys are small enough so storage space should not be a problem. Some of these toys can even double as a decor. You can place it on top of your childís table or toy closet. Some pull alongs like a wagon can double as a storage. You can store your childís toys like dolls and building blocks in the pull along.
