It is proven that babywearing or using a baby carrier is beneficial to both you and baby. As you move around with your new baby in a sling the motion will replicate the motion they felt in utero, this is will help them relax enough to sleep. Your new baby wants to be with you at all times, they find your warmth, heartbeat and scent very comforting. This all has a positive effect on attachment and will help your baby develop happy, confident and relaxed. Other benefits include,
Help to prevent and correct hip dysplasia.
You have your hands free to carry on with your day to day tasks.
You don't have to carry around and transport a heavy, awkward pram, pushchair or stroller.
Keeping baby close means you are able to recognise early feeding cues and if you are breastfeeding some baby carriers allow to feed on the go.
Different carriers available are Mei Tai, Ring sling, woven baby wrap, stretchy baby wrap and buckle carrier.
The Liberty Frigga is a beautiful example of a woven wrap. Made using the finest linen yarn and cotton and coloured in teals, reds, greens and burgundies. This gorgeous wrap provides support and is tied using a series of knots. Ask us for advice on easy knot tying methods for front carry, back carry and side carrying. This is a newborn baby carrier as well as a toddler carrier.
The Girasol ring sling is a wonderful rainbow coloured material. Suitable from birth and encouraging the optimum M shape from the ankles to knees to seat, they help hip growth and prevention of hip dysplasia.
A Mei Tai style carrier such as the Storchenwiege baby carrier is slightly more structured. It has a fabric panel providing lumbar support and an adjustable seat to fit a small baby or young toddler. There are shoulder straps that then cross over and tie under babies bottom to secure the carrier in place.
A buckle carrier is more structured again. The colourful fabric panels of the gorgeous Lillebaby range provide lumbar support and some of the designs have head support and a hood. There are padded shoulder straps that fasten into secure buckles and a padded waist belt that also fastens using a buckle. The straps spread the weight of the child across your back preventing injury to you. The seat can be adjusted easily to accommodate a small baby right through to a toddler and then an older child.
To find the best baby carriers for you and your infants isn't easy as there are many different styles to choose between. We are always on hand to offer advice on fitting and best carrying procedures.
From the first time you meet your baby, they will need to wear a nappy. There are many choices for you to make the main is between disposable nappies and reusable nappies.
It is estimated that around 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away each day that amounts to around 3 billion a year. It is thought that it takes 200 - 500 years for the plastic in disposable nappies to decompose and that they appear most in household landfill waste over everything else. The cost to the environment is huge as is the cost to our wallets. Babies require 10 - 12 nappy changes a day in the first few weeks. This lessens to around 4-5 a day as they grow older. Your baby won't begin toilet training until they are at least 18 months old with some staying in nappies until they are 3. The average cost of buying this amount of nappies for two years is around £800!
Disposable nappies consist of a liner made from the plastic polymer polypropylene which contains sodium polyacrylate. There is then a wood-based pulp layer to absorb liquids and leakages are prevented using a plastic waterproof outer layer and elastic borders around the baby's waist and legs. The chemicals and materials used can cause dry skin and can cause and worsen nappy rash.
With the large environmental impact and the huge cost of disposable nappies, parents are seeking to switch to reusable nappies. The old-fashioned image of a terry cloth wrapped around a baby and secured with a safety pin is a thing of the past, we stock very beautiful modern cloth nappies. Available in a wide variety of different prints and with popper or velcro fastening, a nappy change with modern reusable, washable nappies couldn't be easier.
Modern cloth nappies are made from generally organic cotton cloth that has been pre-shaped, fitted or folded. Our Little Lamb shaped organic bamboo nappies are made from bamboo fibres that are amazingly absorbent whilst lusciously soft on a baby's skin. A velcro across fastening ensures a perfect fit every time. These are also available in a cotton or microfibre version.
These are then encased in a waterproof cover in the form of baby pants or a wrap. These are made from a waterproof breathable material that keeps moisture locked in but allows air to circulate. The wraps and pants are often made using ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). We stock a wonderful selection of different colours and prints of these from leading brands such as Bumgenius, Little Lamb, Flip and Logan and Lenora. We stock all sizes of wraps and cover-alls including pants for use whilst potty training.
Inside reusable cloth nappies, you will need to use nappy liners. We have a variety of nappy liners to choose between from the flip disposable liner to paper liners from Little Lamb. We also stock silk, bamboo and even extremely soft washable fleece liners.
Once used you will need a wet bag or nappy bucket to hold your baby's soiled items. These lock in odours until you are able to pop them into a washing machine. Although manufacturer's washing guidelines differ all the nappies can be washed and then some can go in the tumble dryer.
Out and about you will need to keep a selection of nappies, wraps and liners in your changing bag as well as,
Baby wipes, or your alternative baby cleanser and cotton wool pads or cotton cloths.
Nappy cream or a baby balm to sooth precious skin and provide a barrier against moisture.
Wet bags or nappy bags to enclose soiled items.
Spare baby clothes.
Hand sanitiser in case you have to make an emergency nappy change and there is no sink.
