nkuku home and lifestyle work with artisans around the world to create beautiful homewares and lifestyle products following fair trade principles. Their stunning range of beautiful and practical items will add life and character to your home.
Based in rural South Devon the company started life scribbled on the cover of a paperback on a travelling adventure. They work with artisans, independent businesses and cooperatives, building strong personal relationships to bring you handmade contemporary design using traditional skills and sustainable or reclaimed materials.
Following the principles of fair trade, nkuku work with suppliers from the very start of their fair trade journey. Investing in their success and supporting the process of accreditation. Many of their suppliers are now Fairtrade certified and all are worked with closely to ensure ethical and sustainability standards are upheld at throughout the supply chain.
Their collections are shaped by the desire to work with eco-friendly natural materials. Many of the materials used are waste products reclaimed other industries such as glass, leather, cotton and sari silk. Recycling materials are just one of the way in which nkuku maintain their eco-friendly credentials and minimise their impact on the environment. They also minimise the use of air freight and send out trade deliveries in recycled packaging.
Because their products are handmade each one is unique with its own story to tell. The story of the artisan who made it using traditional skills handed down from generation to generation. The history of the reclaimed materials and all the possibilities of its use in a former life. And the beauty of natural materials such as wood and leather hand finished with passion and love.
