The original idea for storing money inside a hollow receptacle came around about 6 centuries ago. An inexpensive orange clay would be used to make jars, this clay was called Pygg and when people had spare money they would drop it into their Pygg Pot. Over time the English Alphabet evolved and Pygg became Pigge then finally Pig. This language evolution encouraged 19th-century potters to create coin banks in the shape of pigs as a tongue in cheek nod to the original material used.
