What Is a Lip Balm?
Smiling is one of the best things you can do with your lips. And it is essentially important to take care of it. Our lips dry easily because they’re not capable of producing natural body oils. We need to keep it properly hydrated and moisturised to keep it from drying and cracking. And one of the best ways to maintain a kissable lips is using a lip balm.
Dry lips is something you want to avoid. It may sound like a simple problem. But it could lead to serious health issues. When our lips become dry, they become cracked. And when this happens, bacteria and germs could get into the abrasions and cause an infection.
There are many factors that can cause dry lips. Cold temperature, dry air, eating spicy foods as well as constantly licking the lips can all cause chapped lips. Some medications like those containing vitamin A can also cause cracked and dry lips.
Dry lips are easy to manage. With the use of lip balms, we can easily keep our lips moisturised. Using lip balms can also help heal cracked lips because they create a protective barrier and lock in moisture.
Lip Balm Ingredients
There’s a wide variety of lip balms available on the market. They can be made from different ingredients. There are ones that are made purely from natural ingredients. And there are lip balms that are made using a combination of natural ingredients and synthetic chemicals. Natural lip balms are typically produced by small businesses. Lip balms produced by big brands often contain chemicals that are considered toxic and dangerous.
The most common ingredients used in making mass-produced lips balms are beeswax and carnauba wax. They’re mixed with other ingredients like lanolin, alcohol, camphor, cetyl, petrolatum and paraffin.
Petrolatum and paraffin are both byproducts of crude oil production. Many experts suggest that prolonged exposure to these substances could lead to serious medical issues.
Carnauba wax and beeswax are also used for natural lip balm either commercially made or home made. Shea butter is also up there as one of the most common natural ingredients in natural lip balm and other skin care products. It’s known for its moisturising abilities as well as natural healing properties. Most skin types don’t react to shea butter which makes it an ideal ingredient for skin care products.
Natural lip balms have become more popular each year because many people are becoming aware of the nasties found in commercially made lip balms. Aside from the ingredients we mentioned above, these lip balms may contain other toxic chemicals like phthalates, parabens and other additives that could do more bad than good to your lips.
Besides using a lip balm, there are other ways to prevent dry lips. For instance, you should be drinking plenty of water to keep you hydrated. Not only does this good for your lips, but it does good for your whole body as well. When you are in cold areas, wear a scarf or something that offers protection for your mouth.
