What Is a Menís Dopp Kit?

Men's Toiletries

A Dopp kit is essentially a bag of toiletry essentials for the travelling man. In the UK this would be known as a wash bag or toiletry bag, however, the Dopp kit generally refers to both the bag itself as well as the contents.

The History of the Dopp Kit

If you are based in the UK then you may never have heard of a Dopp kit. It’s essentially a wash bag. But like hoover has become synonymous with a vacuum cleaner or Jet Ski for personal watercraft.

The name Dopp kit comes from its creator Charles Doppelt, although he originally called it a toilet bag. Doppelt was a leatherworker who created a specially designed travel case for men’s toiletries. However, it wasn’t until the US army issued a Dopp Kit to it’s GI’s in WW2 that the item became popular. And it is for this reason that Dopp kit has become a byword for men’s travel toiletries or wash bag as many servicemen bought the bags home with them and continued to use them.

The kit contained travel-sized grooming essentials and was designed to be easy to use as it opened wide and stayed open.

Travel Essentials

Nowadays whether you call it a wash bag, a toiletry bag or a Dopp bag most men and women have some kind of case for keeping our toiletries and other essentials in while we travel. And Dopp kits have become popular gifts for men of all ages but especially young men who are making the transition from boyhood to manhood.

There a plenty of things you may want or need in your travel kit but the key is taking smaller items that won’t take up too much space, and making sure you have everything you need.

Some common wash bag essentials include:

  • A Razor.
  • Shaving soap or foam.
  • A toothbrush (possibly with a shorter than usual handle.
  • Toothpaste or tooth toothpaste tablets. These are ideal as you can just take a few.
  • Shampoo, conditioner and bodywash. Either in travel sized bottles or in solid form as these are lighter, more compact and wont leak or make a mess.
  • Moisturiser. Even if you don’t normally bother as travelling can really dry out your skin.
  • A lip balm.
  • A sewing kit.
  • Ear plugs.
  • Eye care.
  • Beard care
  • A comb and any hair product you use.
  • Deodorant.
  • Nail Clippers.
  • Medications.
  • Spare contact lenses.

Of course not everyone will take all of these items and you should also think about how long you are away for and how easy it will be to purchase more while you are there. Depending on travel restrictions you might need to extra careful of the size of any liquids and be aware of any blades.
