What Is the Best Way to Exfoliate the Body?

As well as using soap to cleanse the skin we can also use exfoliation to help lift dirt as well as removing dead skin cells and improving skin circulation. There are a number of bathing accessories available to help with exfoliation both natural and synthetic including wash cloths, loofahs, exfoliating gloves, body brushes and pumice stones.

How you exfoliate the body and how often should be determined by the type of skin you have as well as whether or not you have certain skin conditions. You can get bathing accessories such as brushes, gloves and flannels to physically exfoliate or you can get products that contain physical exfoliants such as coffee grounds. Or you can use chemical exfoliants.

One of the easiest and best ways to exfoliate the body, especially your arms and legs, is to use bath accessories alongside your normal bar of soap or shower gel. This could be an exfoliating mitt, a soap bag, a loofah, a body brush or natural shower puff.

The type of accessory you choose will depend on your skin type as will the frequency with which you should exfoliate. For those with dry skin for example exfoliation once or twice a week is generally sufficient, especially as the process of exfoliation itself can be drying. Whereas those with oily skin may require more frequent exfoliation.

When using exfoliating bath accessories care should be taken not to over exfoliate, making the skin red or irritated. Be gentle and work from the feet up using circular motions. If you have chosen a body brush you should use short strokes and brush before you get in the shower.

Certain areas of the body need different treatment. You may find for example that your chest and pubic area are more sensitive and need a gentler method of exfoliation or you just need to use less pressure. On the other hand your feet will probably need something more intense like a pumice stone to achieve the desired effects, especially if you’ve gone a while without exfoliation.

Body Scrubs

As well as using bathing accessories you can use products specially designed to exfoliate the skin. You can buy brilliant granular soaps and scrubs that will gently exfoliate the skin, improving texture and appearance. Or you can make your own using used coffee grounds, brown sugar or seal salt combined with your favourite oil or even honey.

A simple recipe you can try is to mix half a cup of coffee grounds with 2 tablespoons of hot water and a tablespoon of coconut oil. A great way to reuse some of your morning coffee and a fantastic way to exfoliate and moisturise the skin.
