Why Wooden Balls Are Better Than Plastic Balls

There are many things to consider when buying toys for little children. But with so many different toys to choose from, trying to decide what toys to buy can be overwhelming. Ideally, the toys we buy for our kids should be safe, durable, age-appropriate and have development value. Toys like wooden balls appear simple but they offer so much in terms of facilitating early development and learning.

Plastic balls are widely available and very easy to clean, wooden toys are not far behind. Wooden balls are just as fun to play as their plastic counter without the added environmental implications. Sure, there are still environmental considerations when manufacturing wooden balls, but most of these environmental consequences are being addressed throughout the production process.

Wooden balls are also more tactile than plastic. Children love to explore their surroundings using their hands and the sensation of touching a well-crafted wooden ball is something special. Wooden balls have been around for centuries and are often overlooked but their value as fun and education toys still remain. There is a reason why many nurseries and schools around the world keep wooden toys around for little children to play.

Environmental Impact

Technology and innovation have allowed toymakers to manufacture safer plastic balls. While this is true to some extent, the entire production process of plastic balls have enormous impacts to the environment. No matter how safe a plastic material is, ultimately they are still not biodegradable. When plastic balls reach the end of their useful lives, they are bound for the landfill where they will spend hundreds of years before they start to break down. Not to mention, the plastic balls that have already broken down into microplastics. Microplastic are littering our oceans and seas and causing numerous deaths among marine life populations.

Wooden balls on the other hand are more eco-friendly primarily because wood is a natural resource. Wood is a sustainable and renewable resource. Majority of the wooden toy makers use responsibly sourced wooden materials for making their wonderful wooden balls. Some toy makers even have an initiative where they plant trees for every purchase of their wooden balls.

Safer Play

Some wooden balls are free from known toxic chemicals and hormone disruptors like bisphenol-A or BPA. But still, it is really difficult to know which plastic balls are free from these nasty chemicals and which are not. Most of the time, toy makers list the materials on the packaging of their toys. Keep in mind that toy makers use different kinds of plastic to make toys. If you are not sure what kind of plastic was used in making the plastic ball you like to buy, you are better off buying wooden balls instead. At least with wooden balls you know that they are made from wood.

Wooden balls are highly recommended especially for children who have developed a nasty habit of putting whatever object they can get their hands on into their mouths because wood has natural antibacterial properties. That is not to say you can skip cleaning your wooden balls because you should be cleaning them regularly.
