As your children grow older, ask them to write stories about their dolls and then to act them out. This still encourages your child’s creative side and continues to task their imagination. You could help them by giving them topics or a starting sentence. To further this story writing task encourage children to write five verbs to describe each dolls’ character and personality. To follow on from this ask children to place their dolls into the house and then to draw and paint a picture of them.
Dollhouses are also useful in therapy for a child to describe a traumatic event if they don’t want to talk about it. Dolls houses or dollhouses can trace their history back to 17th Century Europe. Here rather than a child’s toy they were markers of social class and good standing. To own and display a large wooden dolls house was a message to peers about how wealthy you were. The miniature houses or dockenhaus were often called cabinet houses. They were used to house the family’s expensive miniature items, like a china cabinet the front was lockable.
Around this time also popular were Nuremberg Houses. These were replicas of well to do townhouses and were fully equipped with a miniature straw broom, hearth, cooking pots, even a nutmeg grater amongst other household items. They were used as a teaching aid for young girls to learn how to become the lady of the house and how to take charge of her servants. It was also used to instruct the servants as they were often illiterate. A miniature house with its different pieces of furniture and implements served as a visual aid to show them how to do their chores.
Later, in the eighteenth-century baby houses emerged and soon became more popular than house cabinets. A baby house was an exact replica of the family’s own house and was used to display a room set up with wooden furniture, and different textile designs. These were still mainly on display as a conversation piece rather than for children to play with.
It wasn’t until the early 19th century, after the war, that doll houses became more popular to use as children’s toys. Now children were encouraged to play with the miniature furniture and dolls and they started being mass produced and affordable. Now it was recognised that children should play and various play theories were coming into the forefront of developmental research. Children were actively encouraged to explore their emotions and imaginations through role play, and dolls houses became must-have toys.
Dolls houses are now available in many different designs in all price brackets from wonderful traditional Victorian examples to ultra-modern designer versions.
