What are Worry Dolls?

Worry Dolls are most often made in Guatemala from wire, wool and small pieces of fabric. Each worry doll is handmade with care and attention. Guatemalan worry dolls come from a long and rich cultural history, originally from the highlands of Guatemala and around 1 inch long there is no uniform look to the dolls as they are all hand made. Worry Dolls can come on their own, in a bag, in a pouch,  in a little box or as a lucky bean. Some are tiny, whilst others are larger and you can choose which worry dolls you prefer.

Traditionally, worry dolls are given to children to help them with their worries. Children will divulge their innermost secrets, worries, stresses or strains to their little worry dolls. At night they place their worry dolls under their pillows before going to sleep. In the morning, the legend states, the child will wake refreshed and their worries will be gone, as their worry dolls have gone in the night.

The supplier owns a small factory employing just over thirty local people from the nearby village who pack the products while the Mayan artisans work in their own homes in small villages throughout Guatemala, but usually in the highlands.

Employees receive a monthly salary, but in addition, they have emergency medical insurance. Thousands of Guatemalans have supplemented their mainly agricultural income by producing these products and this added income allows families to send their children to school for a precious few more years.

The materials used in making this and other products are widely available in Guatemala and are renewable. Cotton, ceramic, or cibaque (a plant found on the riverbank), recycled paper and wood are amongst them. The company also donates funds to cover the majority of costs for annual community projects, such as building schools, this is the Fair Trade Premium, used to help local communities.
